Cam Skattebo apologizes for 'lapse in judgment' after podcast comments on CTE and asthma

Running back Cam Skattebo issued an apology on his Instagram story after comments he made on the "Bring the Juice" podcast drew attention online.

On the podcast, Skattebo was asked if chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was "a real thing." He replied that it was "an excuse." He also described asthma as "fake" and urged "soft" asthmatics to "just breathe air."

"I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma," Skattebo wrote. "It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward. MUCH LOVE!!!"

CTE is a progressive degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head impacts and other trauma, according to the Mayo Clinic.[1] Boston University's CTE Center has diagnosed the condition in 617 of 689 former NFL players whose brains were donated for research, as of August 2024.[2]

Skattebo, who played for Arizona State University in the 2024 college football season, rushed for 1,398 yards and 17 touchdowns on 222 carries.[3][4] He also recorded 45 receptions for 881 yards and three touchdowns.

Arizona State reached the College Football Playoff quarterfinals with an 11-3 record before losing to Texas, 34-31, on December 31, 2024.[3][4]

Skattebo declared for the 2025 NFL Draft following the season.[3]
