Alabama youth baseball player Chase Utley shares name, position and handedness with Phillies legend

A youth baseball player from Mobile, Alabama, named Chase Utley plays second base, bats left-handed and throws right-handed, matching the profile of the former Philadelphia Phillies second baseman with the same name.[3][4]

The elder Chase Utley played 16 major league seasons from 2003 to 2018, primarily with the Phillies from 2003 to 2015 before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a member of the Phillies' 2008 World Series championship team and was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame on August 13, 2024.[1][2]

The younger Chase Utley was born in August 2009, approximately 10 months after the Phillies' 2008 World Series victory.[3]

His father, Brian Utley, a Kansas City Royals fan, chose the name during the Phillies' 2008-2009 World Series runs. Mother Amanda Utley suggested "Chase" independently, initially hesitant upon learning of the coincidence, but approved after confirming the player's reputation as a leader.[3]

Brian Utley told Fox News Digital: "I grew up a big baseball fan... The name just kind of rolls off the tongue when your name's already Utley."[3] Amanda added: "Is Chase Utley a good guy? ... He's an awesome guy and a great role model."[3]

The elder Utley called the exact name match and position overlap "extremely unique." He has encountered children and pets named after him but no other Utleys outside family.[3]

The younger Utley also plays shortstop and is listed as a right-handed pitcher by Perfect Game, the leading youth baseball scouting organization. Scouting vice president Jered Goodwin highlighted his athleticism and potential for Division I college baseball.[3][4]

At tournaments, the name sparks confusion, with umpires and fans mistaking Brian Utley for the elder player. The families plan an introduction soon, possibly via Zoom followed by an in-person meeting.[3]
